Review #222: Springbank 12 CS Batch #15 56.5%
Springbank 12 CS is a Campbeltown flag ship release. While they don't keep official batch numbers, the 56.5% is the 15th release. Traditionally, it is 70% sherry, 30% ex bourbon and I assume this batch follows suit. I have been a fan of the Springbank 12 CS but for some reason I never have bought a bottle. It always seems when I go to buy a bottle, I tend to audible at the last minute and pick something else up. I think it is the curiosity of the unknown that has prevented me. Lets see how it this batch holds up.
Color - Burnished
Nose - Funk and sherried fruit, apricots, raisins, vanilla, barn interior, hay, apple peel
Palate - Apricots, grapes, ginger, new wood, and there is a tart note that I just can't pick out
Finish - Medium - Dates, raw oak, ginger, coffee, treacle, and the salt and peat combines to a charred roast cap flavor
Overall - 7 - This was everything that I expect out of this dram. Funk, sherry, and a weird combination of flavors that just works. This was heavier in sherry notes and lighter on funk than I remember from the last time I had this. There was a touch more raw wood on the finish than I would hope for from this dram. It isn't enough to spoil the party but does through the finish slightly off balance. Am I going to go out and buy a bottle? I probably will, sooner or later. Though lately, it has been a little hard to find than it has been in the past.
