Review #245: Mortlach 22 AD Rattray for Binnys

Speyside - 22 - NCF - NCA - $200 - 55.3%

This is an IB from Mortlach, a workhorse for Johnnie Walker blends.  This particular bottle is an ex-bourbon.  This is my first Mortlach so I am interested to see what it is like.

Color - Burnished
Nose -  Granny smith apple peels, baked nutmeg cookies, vanilla, more baking spices, marshmallow
Palate - Poached apples, gingerbread, vanilla,
Finish - Long - Allspice, nutmeg, and ginger balanced out by this syrupy sweetness
Overall - 5.5 -  Pretty deep color for an ex-bourbon.  Interesting nose, lets of baking spices almost more inline with sherry.  The deep tart apple smells delicious with the spice.  The actual whisky is relatively simple but pretty tasty.  The finish very dry, making me salivate.  It also has more heat than I would expect.  Overall, it is enjoyable but not my cup of tea.  It is just too spicy for me to really enjoy.  I am glad I got to have this but I would not be a buyer.
