Review 149 & 150: BenRiach 2008 Peated/Port 9 Single Cask 63.2% & BenRiach 2005 Peated/Port 12 Single Cask 53.1%

Today I will side by side two BenRiach peated and port cask matured.  One is young and high and ABV, one a little older with a much lower ABV

Speyside - 9 - NCF- NCA - Sample ($80 at the local) - 63.2%

Color - Auburn
Nose - Peat smoke, cherry, vanilla, geraniums
Palate - Cherry, smoke
Finish - Medium - Smoke, cherries, vanilla
Overall - 7 - This for sure does not have the heat that the ABV would imply.  However, the mouthfeel is just luscious.  While not complex, it is a lovely peated port dram.  To me this is a peated port worth sipping on just for luxurious body.  I would equate this to a cask strength sherry bomb, not a ton going on, but is really nice to sip on.

Speyside - 12- NCF- NCA - Sample ($100 at the local) - 53.1%

Color - Auburn
Nose - Vanilla, nutmeg, red fruit - strawberry with cherry, and smoke
Palate - Strawberry, red jolly ranchers  - Very thick and oily mouthfeel
Finish - Long - Bonfire smoke, cherry, cough syrup
Overall - 6 - This one also is just luscious and coating mouth feel.  It is more scaled back than the 9 but still have a great feel to it.  I personal prefer the 9 and would take that over the 12 and especially at a lower price point.
