Reveiw #282: Glen Scotia Victoriana

Cambeltown - NAS - NCF - NCA - $90 - 51.5%

Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown distillery that along with Springbank and Kilkerran represent all of the region.  The shtick behind this is that is made in "Victorian style".  From what I have read about Scotch during the era of the Pattinson boom/crash, the whisky was young, harsh and not that good.  It mainly boomed due to the collapse of the wine and cognac market due to the phylloxera blight. Anyways, their website does not describe what this exactly this means besides that they don't chill filter it.

Color - Deep Gold
Nose -  Malt, saline, toffee, citrus, funk
Palate -  Treacle, apples, citrus, funk
Finish - Medium short - Saline, fresh apples, funk, toffee, sandelwood, pepper
Overall - 6 - This is an alright dram but not really that complex.  The peat on this one is strange and I have had no end of difficulty trying to identify the flavor.  Normally I would say this is a oceanic vein but the salt water is totally separate from the peat. It is not a bad whisky but just feels very generic. It is easy drinking and nice, worth picking up at clearance but not worth the MSRP.
