Review #260: Kilchoman 2010 6 year Whisky library pick 59.2%

Islay - 6- NCF - NCA - $110 - 59.2%

Kilchoman is Islay's newest distillery (at least with whisky aged 3 years).  Their whole spiel is that they are a farm distillery that makes their own malt from seed to spirit.  I am sure that is only true for a fraction of their whisky, but still a neat story.  Kilchoman has made a spirit that ages to potable maturity very quickly to help the young distillery survive.  However, besides their wine finishes, I have not been very impressed with them.  I picked this one up as a misfit and enjoyed it.  This is an ex-bourbon single cask aged about two years.

Color - Pale Gold
Nose - Malt, lemons, incense, lapsang, fresh apples, cantaloupe, burnt match
Palate - Lemons, apples, lapsang, sea spray, toffee
Finish - Medium - Smoked oysters, lemon drops, marshmallow, candied apples, toffee
Overall - 7 - This is a pretty solid peated whisky.  It has enough going on to keep you interested, it drinks well, and it gets a little better with each sip.  The peat, salt, citrus and fruit balance each other well.  This is really enjoyable and I am glad I got a bottle.
