Review #256: Octomore 7.2
Islay - NAS - NCF - NCA - $180 - 58.6%
Octomore is Bruichladdich's heavily peated limited release that comes out every year. The Ocotmores are all very young, heavily peated and cask strength. This particular one is made from "American oak casks with casks that once held Syrah created in the great vineyards of the Rhone". Sounds tasty. As a note, the .2s are duty free exclusives.
Color - Old Gold
Nose - Buttercream, berries, tidal pools, lint, nag champa, bitter lemon, air freshener, tar
Palate - Oily, Toffee, syrup, diesel, saline, berries
Palate - Oily, Toffee, syrup, diesel, saline, berries
Finish - Long - Berries, fresh pears, bonfire smoke, that fades to cigar ash and treacle
Overall - 7 - The noses is not as peated as I would have expected. There is a lot sweet but more a funk, than a traditional peat. The palate is dense and oily. The finish is nice, long and peated. This is everything I expect from an Octomore, big, in your face, a bit brash. If there are any sitting on shelves any more, it is worth picking up.
