Review #213: Longrow Red 13 Malbec
Longrow does a yearsly release where they finish their spirit in a different red wine barrel. The Malbec was matured for 12 years in ex-Bourbon and by months in fresh Malbec barriques from the De Toren Private cellar in Stellenbosch, South Africa. This is an interesting choice as Malbec is known for being Argentinian and the grape itself originated in France in Cohers.
Color - Russet
Nose - Peat - Smoked oysters, honey, lemon, sea spray, hints of caramel and cherry
Palate - Caramel, generic white fruit, citrus, candied cherries
Finish - Medium - Mixed berries, diesel, match smoke, and fades to honey and lemon
Overall - 5.5 - This one just misses on the red wine, the influence not the type used. It seems like they needed to keep it in the barrels longer or have more porous barrels. It has some of the influence you would expect from a red wine finish but it is much too muted. While enjoyable, it is not that punch of peat and red wine that I love and was expecting.
