Review #117: Aultmore 9-Year Single Cask The Sovereign First-fill Sherry

Aultmore 9-Year Single Cask The Sovereign First-fill Sherry

Speyside - 9 years old - NCF - NCA - $50 - 59.8%
Color - Burnt Amber - is this color added? It is so dark
Nose - Huge sherry fruit, figs, raisins, cloves, nutmeg - it is all sherry here - water softens the nose and brings out vanilla
Taste - Raisins, vanilla, a bit dense on the palate - water brings out sweetness and citrus and apricots
Finish - Medium - Burnt sugar, baking spices, and I get a bitter wood note - water gets rid of the bitter note, adds some toffee but brings down the intensity of the finish a lot
Overall - 7 - This is a decent sherry bomb. It is a little over powering but if you want sherry that shows up and sticks its middle finger in your face, you might like this. It could use a couple more years in the barrel but for the price, it is a nice drinker. It did benefit a lot from a few drops of water. If you shop at K&L, I might reach for this over standard NSA Sherry bomb.
Rating system is price influenced as it is based on my shopping decisions when buying a bottle.
