Review #34 & #35: Ledaig 10 & Ledaig G&M 13 Refill Sherry
Ledaig 10
Ledaig is the peated expressions from the Tobermory distillery located on the Isle of Mull. The 10 is their entry level and seems to be quite popular among reviewers.
Thank you u/u/odmbitters for the sample
Island - 10 Year - NCF - NCA - Sample ($60 at the local) - 46.3%
Color - Yellow Gold
Nose - Sea breeze, pepper, and a waxiness. I am not getting any peat of the nose, just classic island notes.
Taste - Sweetness, porridge, vanilla, light milkiness, and medicinal peat. Decent mouthfeel, not full, not thin.
Finish - Medium - Sweet vanilla with hints of creosote and smoke
Overall - 6 - Overall not a bad dram. I wish more of the island character from the nose would make it the palate and finish. While not overly complex, it is an enjoyable dram. There were some flavors I couldn't put my finger on. The nose, The combination of island and peat is very interesting. However, it leaves me wanting more of either the island profile or the peated profile. This is a dram that I would like to more than a sample to get to know. If this goes on sale, I will get a bottle to get better acquainted.
2000 Gordon and MacPhail Ledaig 13 year, refill sherry hogshead, 56.9% (Binny’s)
Thank you u/nats_fan[+1] for the sample
Island - 13 Years- NCF - NCA - Sample ($90 at the local) - 56.9%
Color - Yellow Gold
Nose - Sea breeze, hints of apricots, a bit of spice and sweetness. The nose is closed, muted, and surprising lack of heat for the ABV. Once again, not getting peat on the nose
Taste - Pepper, raisins, molasses, Parmesan. Nice mouthfeel on this one.
Finish - Medium long - Sweet milky custard and figs. The peat is turned way down on this but still present with a little hints of tar and smoke
Overall - 5.5 - This is a funny one. I am only picking up a little bit of sherry and even less peat. This isn't a bad thing because this feels like a nice balanced dram. It is interesting, because that was the flavor profile that I was expecting. I have to knock this one though because the nose is just so flat. The finish on this was big and enjoyable, if the nose could have matched this, I would be a lot more excited about this dram. My intro to Ledaig was enjoyable, I am now going to have to try out the base Tobermory.
Rating system is price influenced as it is based on my shopping decisions when buying a bottle.
