Review #15: Douglas Laing’s Big Peat

Douglas Laing’s Big Peat (Islay Blend)

Islay - NAS Blend - NCF - No Color Added - Sample ($60 at the local) - 46%

The Douglas Laing blends went on sale at my local and I picked up all the ones they had, reviews of which can be found here and here. I was able to obtain a sample of the one they were out of stock of, Big Peat.

According to Douglas Laing's website, this blend contains Caol Ila to bringing sweetness, Bowmore the perfect balance, Ardbeg the medicinal, earthy quality and Port Ellen, a degree of elegance along with a "couple blenders secrets".

Color - Pale Gold

Nose - Big smoke at first but that quickly gets married with cereal smell. It is a mediciney iodine bonfire well mixed with a barley cereal.

Taste - Cigar ash, sea air, burnt tires, cooked mash, and some nice oil to coat the palate. There is a touch of sweetness in there as well.

Finish - Medium - Smoke, porridge and dry.

Overall - 6.5 - This is a nice enjoyable blend. It has some big flavors in there but it is not overpowering. This would be a nice whisky for when you want to go bigger than an Ardbeg 10 but don't feel like the punch in the face you get from Uigeadail. My biggest complaint is that the finish could last longer. For how oily it was, the length was a bit of disappointment. I did like it enough that I will probably pick up the Christmas CS Big Peat is I see it/swap for it.

Rating system is price influenced as it is based on my shopping decisions when buying a bottle.
