Review #11: Jura 10 Year Old

Jura 10 Year Old

Isle of Jura - 10 Years - Chill Filtered- Color Added - $50 (sample from coworker) - 40%

Jura is the only distillery on the Isle of Jura. At one time, they used to produce heavily peated whisky similar to neighboring Islay. However, they shuttered and when they reopened went with a more Speyside style. Jura 10 is matured in American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels with an aged Oloroso Sherry cask finish. As a note, this was sitting unopened in a wine cellar so this may be an older bottling.

Color - Burnished

Nose - Starts out with a big hit of must, then drift wood, bran and a touch of Barbicide

Palate - Big caramel notes up front, mash and cereal. A little watery. As it sits in your mouth, the sweet and vanilla notes hits.

Finish - Short, marzipan, Christmas spices

Overall - 5 - This one starts out interesting with a funky nose. The must smell reminds me of the nose of an aged Chateauneuf. However, my excitement quickly faded once I started tasting it. It lacked mouthfeel and was not interesting. The finish was surprisingly short. I am glad I tried it so I could experience the Jura nose, but I won't be adding a bottle of this to my collection.

Rating system is price influenced as it is based on my shopping decisions when buying a bottle.
